Tax Deferral

Why pay taxes on money you don't spend? With a variable annuity, any dividends, interest or capital gains are not taxed in the year earned, unless you withdraw the money. Instead, the earnings are reinvested in your account so that they can produce more earnings, working harder for your retirement program. This represents the "compounding" advantage of an annuity (see "Compound Often and Early" table).

Example
Two couples, the Larsons and the Meyers, began an identical retirement program at different ages.

While both couples contributed annually, the chart shows what a difference starting early can make

Compound Often and Early
  Larsons
Began at age 35
Meyers
Began at age 50
Contributed $5000 at the beginning of each year For 30 years For 15 years
Accumulated value at age 65 After 30 years After 15 years
  $611,729 $146,621

This example assumes the variable annuities earned 8% a year, tax-deferred. Earnings are subject to taxation upon withdrawal.

The family profiles and examples are hypothetical. The information provided is not intended as investment advice or to imply or guarantee any specific return from the Thrivent Financial Flexible Premium Deferred Variable Annuity.
