Describing Chapters; Terminology Guidelines

How do I describe chapters?

A chapter is a geographic group of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans members who create and participate in charitable, social and educational activities. All Thrivent Financial members belong to chapters, which give them a process and resources to help others and build community with others who share a common bond.

Chapter Terminology Guidelines
There’s another way we can show our unity, and that’s by ensuring that we describe ourselves the same way. Whether you’re in Arizona, Pennsylvania, or somewhere in between it’s important people know we are all Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. These guidelines will help you do just that:

  • Refer to the organization as "Thrivent Financial for Lutherans" on written pieces ("Thrivent Financial" on second reference), not "Thrivent" or "TFFL."
  • Do not directly precede the word "Chapter" with the word "Financial" as in "Thrivent Financial Chapter." An acceptable alternative would be "Thrivent chapter," as in "Four Thrivent chapters will work together." However, this alternative should be avoided, if possible.
  • When referring to your chapter, the preferred method is "[your chapter name] of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans."
The nuts and bolts:

What should you call...?

The organization: Thrivent Financial for Lutherans on first reference. Thrivent Financial okay on subsequent references.

Your Chapter: [Chapter Name] Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, for example, the Dane County Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans

Your service team: You can say members of the [Chapter Name] Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans.

See examples of inappropriate uses of our name.
