Just What is a Geriatric Care Manager?

When your loved one needs care, you may not be able to handle the load yourself or you may be at a distance and not able to handle all the necessary duties.

Perhaps what you need is a professional geriatric care manager. This person can consult with doctors, hire a housekeeper, organize insurance and hospital bills and accompany your loved one in an emergency.

The profession continues to grow in various areas across the United States. Fees can range from $100 to $150 an hour. While those costs may seem high, so can long distance communication and frequent travel over a period of months or years.

A professional may offer you peace of mind as well as experience handling and overcoming objections to care and lifestyle changes.

Here are some ways to get in touch with a geriatric care manager near you:

  • Contact the National Association of Professional Geriatric Care Managers for a list of professional care managers near you.
  • Call the Eldercare Locator at (800) 677-1116. It's a service of the National Association of Area Agencies. The Eldercare Locator offers elderly people and their family members service referrals in the nearest community.
  • Contact your city or county social service agency for help in locating a professional caregiver.
