What Do You Do When Your Parents Need Care?

They hugged you when you cried. They made you laugh when you felt misunderstood. They taught you so much and gave you confidence with every step you took in life.

When the mom or dad who raised you becomes ill or injured, it captures your attention. It becomes time for you to help the person who helped you for so many years.

There are steps you can take to make the adjustment easier for the parents you love and for your peace of mind as they return to their home.

  • Remove throw rugs to prevent trips and falls.
  • Apply nonskid strips to bathtubs and uncarpeted stairs.
  • Add an extra phone or two in convenient places or give your parents a cordless phone.
  • Eliminate long phone cords.
  • Lower the temperature setting on the water heater to guard against scalding.
  • Install a bath bench and hand-held nozzle to help your mom or dad shower.
  • Buy kitchen utensils with special handles help those who have trouble gripping regular handles.
  • Replace door knobs with levers, which are much easier to use.

If the choice is to have mom or dad come to your home, you may need to make some changes.

Those changes may be as complicated as remodeling to add a separate bathroom and bedroom or as simple as adding grab bars to your bath tub.

Physical or occupational therapists can offer you advice to make your home a safer place for your parents. Many specialty items are available in stores or through catalogs.

When it's time for you to provide care for mom or dad, you'll be able to adjust.
